Related Research and Resources

2020 Recruiting Benchmark Report – CareerPlug analyzed hiring activity from over 10,000 companies and 10 million job applications to establish recruiting benchmarks for 10 different industries (e.g. education, healthcare, and retail). Some of the key findings from our research include the following:

  • Employers should aim for a job view-to-applicant conversion rate of at least 10%. Though companies that perform well with this metric achieve a 15-20% rate.
  • The number of applicants it takes to make one hire varies by industry. In education, it’s as low as 46 applicants. At the other end of the range, it’s 185 for cleaning services. The top performing industries in our benchmarks need 64% fewer applicants to make a hire than the worst performing industries.
  • The time of the year that a job is posted is a major predictor of the number of applicants the job will receive. The best months of the year to post jobs are January, June, and July. The worst months are November and September.
  • Job boards are the most common source for applicants producing upwards of 80% of applications. However, the percentage of applicants hired from job boards is 0.22%, whereas referrals and career pages contribute 19.17% and 5.18% respectively.

Frequently asked questions about small business hiring software

Do I need HR experience to use this?

No. CareerPlug is built for owner-operators and general managers who hire as part of their job, not for full-time HR professionals. Most first-time users are posting a job and taking applications the same day they sign up. The workflows are deliberately linear — post, screen, interview, offer, onboard — no approval trees or complex permissioning to configure up front. You're not reading a 200-page manual before you can use the tool.

It's an ATS plus everything around it. Traditional enterprise ATSs are built for large HR teams with complex approval workflows, multi-stage compliance reviews, and recruiter-specific features you don't need. CareerPlug strips that complexity and adds job distribution, screening tools, text recruiting, and onboarding in one tool. You're not stitching together Greenhouse plus Indeed Sponsored plus DocuSign plus your payroll system — it's one login for the whole hire.

Yes, and that's where it shines. Restaurants, retail, home services, and cleaning companies are some of the heaviest users for exactly this reason. Bulk candidate text outreach, reusable pre-qualified candidate pools, and rehire workflows for past applicants are built for operators who are always hiring. The platform assumes you're running a constant, low-effort hiring motion rather than doing one big search a year.

Most owners and managers are running their first hire inside a day. Initial setup (careers page, first job template, pre-screen questions) takes a couple of hours. After that, new jobs are a few minutes each. Support is available when you get stuck, not required to get started — and more than 10 years of refining the product for exactly this audience means the sharp edges have been filed down.

The same tool that posts your first job runs a 50-location operation. When you grow, you add locations, invite more hiring managers, set up PartnerHub for multi-location visibility — you don't migrate to a different platform. The architecture is built around the growth stages we see in real businesses: I Do Everything → I Manage Everyone → I Manage Managers → Business Runs Without Me. Same platform, different features unlock as you need them.
