Quitting your job is a big life decision and one that shouldn’t be taken likely. However, recognizing when it’s time to make a change can be difficult. There are some telltale signs that people fail to recognize, leading to long periods of unhappiness at their current job. Pay attention to the following signs at your job so you know when it’s time to move on.
You Don’t Like Your Boss – Working for someone you don’t get along can be a serious detriment to your overall performance and happiness in the workplace. If you don’t see eye-to-eye with your boss, you’re probably not going to be motivated to perform tasks for them. Excitement about your contributions will be lacking and as a result, you’ll fail to reach your full potential. Furthermore, the negativity it adds to your life and to the workplace overall might not be worth it. Nobody wants to dread going to work.
Your Commute – A long trip to work and back everyday can take its toll. While certain individuals may not mind it, making two 30+ minute trips everyday can bother some people, adding unnecessary unhappiness and stress to their lives. Whether it’s sitting in traffic, getting up earlier, or driving long distances, a long and difficult commute is a good reason to pack it up and look for a job elsewhere (read: closer to home!).
Wrong Culture – It’s important to align with your company’s moral and ethical values. If these values come into conflict, your work and your attitude will suffer. For example, do you like making crude jokes with your colleagues? If so, then a conservative culture with an emphasis on professionalism may not be a good fit for you. There is no right or wrong way here, just make sure your personal preferences in the work environment align with the company’s.
Choosing to leave your job can be difficult, but sometimes it can be the right decision to make. Recognizing when it’s time to move on will help your overall happiness and work performance in the long run. Find the right job for you!
